At Broad Stroke Associates all (100%) of our technicians have been trained by BMW through their Service Technician Education Program (STEP). This is post technical school training. Admission is by scholarship only. It requires eight (8) months to complete and a year of work within a dealership. Additionally; the BSA technicians collectively have over 35 years of dedicated BMW experience.

All of our employees also have extensive dealership work experience. We know the information systems that BMW MINI uses and we have access to technical bulletins, service updates, or other important information that may apply to your vehicle.

Because we are not trying to work on multiple manufacturers vehicles we can afford to have the latest and the best special tools and systems to use on your vehicle. Special tools and the latest computer based diagnostic and tuning systems benefit both the vehicle owner and the technician. They enable the work to be completed accurately and quickly. This not only insures a quality service but it also saves time and that means fewer hours required to service your vehicle. And that means lower cost to you.

We know about reliability

How you take care of your vehicle has a lot to do with how reliable it is. Many people think that simply following the Owners Manual of recommended services should insure that their vehicle never fails them. Fluid changes and maintenance are the life blood of your vehicle; however, the recommended service levels and timing really represent only the minimum that is to be done. When customers come to BSA we do a lot more than just change your oil and filter and send you on your way. Every time we perform routine service we take that opportunity to evaluate the critical elements of the vehicle and alert you to potential problems. We are not simply “up-selling” and we never push our customers to buy parts and services that they don’t need. And remember that a well-maintained vehicle with complete service records can add substantially to its resale value.

The next reliability service is an Inspection I.

Engine Compartment:

  • With the AutoLogic diagnostic computer system, review the vehicles engine management system to identify faults stored in the vehicles computers.
  • Change the oil and oil filter using the proper synthetic oil and OEM filter.
  • Check antifreeze, coolant, brake, clutch, and windshield washer fluid levels and correct as necessary.
  • Examine engine cooling system, hoses, radiator, flash tank, and heater hose connections for leaks.
  • Verify that the heater and air conditioner is working properly.
  • Perform a battery load test and check the electrolyte levels of the battery.

Cabin and Interior:

  • Reset service indicator.
  • Check all interior and exterior lighting for functionality.
  • Check indicator lights, instrument panel, and dashboard for illumination and control.
  • Check washer and wiper system for functionality.
  • Verify operation of all doors and closures as well as grease hood, trunk/tailgate and door latches.
  • Check safety belts for functionality and visually check air bag units for obvious damage or torn covers.
  • Verify that mirrors are in working order.

Underside:

  • Check the power steering system, rear axle, and transmission for leaks; your fuel connections, lines, and tanks will be visually checked or leaks.
  • Check the exhaust system for leaks, proper positioning and mounting, and overall condition.
  • Check front control arm and bushing for wear.
  • Check steering system for absence of play and overall condition.
  • Clean the brake pad contact points, check the brake disc surfaces, and examine the thickness of your brake pads.
  • Examine brake lines and clutch system connectors for leaks, damage, and proper positioning.
  • Check positioning and movement of parking brake cables.
  • Check all tires, including your spare, for proper tire pressure.
  • Examining tires for wear and even tread, realigning or correcting if necessary, and
  • Grease wheel center hubs.

The Final Test

To confirm all of the check points of BMW Inspection 1 and to verify that all systems are proper working the technician will take your vehicle on a short road test.

How often is Inspection 1 necessary?

The BMW service schedules vary based on the age and mileage of the vehicle.

For BMW’s made before or during 1991, your first Inspection 1 should have occurred at 15,000 miles, then every 30,000 miles after that, so again at 45,000 miles, then 75,000 miles, 105,000 miles and so forth.

For model years 1992-1998 and the 1999 E36, the first Inspection 1 should have ocurred at 20,000, then every subsequent 40,000 mile interval, e.g. 60,000, 100,000, 140,000, 180,000 and so forth.

For BMWs manufactured after 1999 (excluding the ’99 E36), the first Inspection 1 service is set at 30,000 and then every 60,000 miles after that, with second at 90,000, third at 150,000, fourth at 210,000 and so forth.

Inspection II is the most comprehensive element of your BMW maintenance schedule, incorporating all of the elements of Inspection 1 with a few additional features.

  • Inspection of your parking brake lining,
  • Replacement of spark plugs,
  • Replacement of air filters
  • Examination of flexible boots for leaks, and
  • Inspection of the car body for rust per your rust prevention warranty.
  • (M cars also require additional engine adjustments)

How often should you schedule Inspection 2?

For model years 1991 and older, your first scheduled Inspection 2 should be at 30,000 miles and every subsequent 30,000 mile interval.

For years 1992-1998 and the 1999 E36 Inspection 2 should be done at 40,000 miles and every subsequent 40,000 mile interval.

For model years 1999 (except for the E36) and newer, your first Inspection 2 should be at 60,000 miles and every subsequent 60,000 mile interval.
